BGS Fall Ball is an opportunity for players to continue softball through the Fall season. As USA Softball uses the birthdates of 9/1-8/31, players who will be moving up to the next age division in next Spring, actually do so in Fall. This allows players to get used to a new ball size, different pitching distance and advanced level of play before the Spring season.
As Fall is not the primary season for softball, Fall Ball is a smaller program due to both field availability and players having other sports or activities that are prioritized in the Fall. Summer Flames and Blaze players will have first priority in registering for Fall Ball. Due to field availability, we may not be able to place all registrants on a team. If your player is participating in multiple other sports or activities in Fall, it may not be a good fit for your player. It is okay to take a season off. Multi-sport athletes, especially at younger ages, are proven to be stronger athletes in their primary sport and have reduced risk of overuse injury.
BGS typically fields teams in the 8U-14U divisions. These teams tend to be larger to account for Fall conflicts. Practices are typically 2x per week - 1 field practice and 1 batting cage. Games are typically on the weekends. The number of teams and team sizes depend on player numbers and field availability.
What is the Recreation team?
The Fall Recreation teams will participate in the Peninsula League. This league is formed of teams from local cities up and down the Peninsula. More recently, the Peninsula league has been divided into North and South divisions so that there is less travel for games. Double headers are held on the weekends - Friday evenings, Saturday day/evening and Sunday day/evening are all possible game times. Schedule requests can be made by coaches but are not guaranteed due to field constraints. The Peninsula League typically runs from late August/early September through early November, with playoffs in mid-November. Teams typically have 10-12 double headers.
The Recreation team is a good option for players not yet ready for competitive play who want to continue to build on skills over the Fall season. Players entering a new division, newer to softball, wanting more reps in a specific position (such as pitcher or catcher) or uninterested in tournaments, may all be better suited for the Recreation team.
What is the Tournament team?
The Fall tournament teams will continue to participate in tournaments through the Fall, similar to summer Flames programs. Tournaments typically consist of 3 pool play games over Friday and Saturday with 1-3 games on Sunday (single elimination). 3 tournaments will be scheduled between late August and November with a final 4th Tournament for Tots in December. Tentative date options are listed below, however tournaments will be chosen based on coach and player availability, and location (striving to participate at closer fields in Fremont, Hayward or Pleasanton).
The Tournament team is a good option for competitive players wanting to face tough competition in a tournament format. This team is often geared toward 2nd year players or very strong 1st year players in which softball is their primary sport. Fall Tournament teams are larger than Summer Flames teams. Players may be rostered to attend 2 of the 3 Pool Play games and then Sunday's roster will be chosen based on positioning needs and Saturday performance. Tournament teams will also engage in friendlies with other local select or tournament teams on non-tournament weekends for additional reps. This will also aid in equalizing playing time on larger tournament rosters.
